If you are staying in the Netherlands after your graduation to seek employment in the Netherlands, or you come back to the Netherlands within three years after your graduation to seek employment on a search year visa (‘Zoekjaar’, or ‘orientation year highly educated persons’), you can take out our Search Year Insurance.

This is only applicable, if you are a student from outside the European Economic Area and meet the following requirements:

You have had our Aon Student Insurance for at least a period of 6 consecutive months not longer than 3 years ago
You are in the possession of a search year permit, or you at least already applied for a search year permit at the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND) and you possess a confirmation of this application.
You are unemployed and not obliged to have a Dutch Basic Healthcare Insurance.

Premium

Insured period
The end date of the Search Year Insurance must be equal to the end date of your search year permit, or any date before the expiration date of this permit.

Pre-existing conditions
Please know that the Search Year Insurance will not cover all expenses related to pre-existing conditions, even if you had an Aon Student Insurance before in which full coverage for pre-existing conditions were included.

The Search Year insurance will cover medical expenses for pre-existing conditions in case of an acute worsening of the pre-existing condition, which could not have been foreseen at the start date of the insurance. For example, if you have asthma, you will not be covered for the asthma medication (this could have been foreseen before starting your Search Year Insurance), but in case of an asthma attack, then it will be covered.

Employment during your search year
If you have found a job, you are obliged to take out a Dutch Basic Healthcare Insurance. This means that your Search Year Insurance becomes invalid as per the start date of your employment. The insurance needs to be cancelled by yourself, by logging in to your personal account. Make sure that, in that situation, you cancel your insurance as soon as possible, because it is impossible to backdate the cancellation of the Search Year Insurance.

In case of starting a job within your search year, you will have to conclude a Dutch Basic Healthcare Insurance. Aon Student Insurance does not provide the Dutch Basic Healthcare Insurance for Search Year students that start working, therefore you have to arrange this yourself with a provider of your choice.
