Frequently asked questions
Coverage comes into effect per the start date of the insured period. If the effective date is the same as the date of application, the cover commences at the moment at which this insurance was applied for.
The cover does not come into effect until the moment that you depart your home in the home country and start your journey to the destination country.
Coverage is only provided when your premium is paid to Aon on time. We adhere to a strict thirty-day payment deadline for each invoice sent. You might be used to ‘cash before cover’ or ‘if you don’t pay it will be cancelled’. This is not the case for the Aon Student Insurance, because we already provide coverage per start date, even if you have not paid yet. We do this, because sometimes coverage is needed quickly and international bank transfers can be delayed, for example. We do not want you, as an international student, to not be covered due to something simple as that.
You can cancel your Aon Student Insurance free of charge at any time on a day-to-day basis. Aon will refund the premium paid in advance for the remainder of your insurance period. Please note that this is not applicable if the cancellation is due to the intention of misleading Aon or the insurer.
You can cancel your Aon Student Insurance yourself in your personal account. When cancelling your Aon Student Insurance, you will be asked to provide:
- The reason for the cancellation
- A bank account to which a premium refund can be transferred to (if applicable)
Please note that exchange rate deficiencies and any charges for a refund payment to a non-SEPA bank account will be for your own expense. The refund payment can take up to two weeks to a SEPA bank account and up to three weeks for international bank transfers to non-SEPA bank accounts.
If your insurance was applied for by your university, please contact your university. They will assist you with the cancellation.
The Aon Student Insurance is an insurance for studying purposes abroad. The coverage includes (depending on your insurance coverage):
- Emergency assistance
- Social & medical repatriation
- Medical expenses
- Dental expenses
- Accidents
- Liability
- Legal assistance
- Home contents
- Luggage
We intend to send you the confirmation e-mail with your insurance certificate and the policy conditions as soon as possible, but at most within five working days after your application.
During periods with large amounts of applications (August/September), processing your application might take a little longer. If your application is accepted, the insurance will come into effect per the start date in your application. If the start date has already passed due to the time required to process your application, coverage will be applied retrospectively per start date.
You can file your claim online, via your online account or the claim form. You need to follow the steps and provide all the information requested to handle your claim. You will need to keep the original receipts for one year after submission of the claim as Aon may ask you to provide them in a later stage.
During your application you can choose whether you want to pay by credit card, bank transfer or direct debit.
Credit card
In case of a credit card payment you can pay with either Visa or Mastercard. American Express is not accepted. You will receive the invoice after your application is reviewed and accepted.Bank transfer
This payment option can be done from almost any account in the world. Please note that additional charges for international bank transfers and currency deficiencies are for your own expense.Direct debit
This payment option can only be chosen, if you have an IBAN bank account number from the Single European Payment Area (SEPA).Aon invoices you in such a way that your last payment is for the entire month. Therefore, the first invoice is for a broken period. In case you have chosen for monthly installments, your first invoice will be for the broken period / partly month plus the first full month combined. The period the premium applies to, will also be shown in your invoice. After this first invoice, you will receive invoices for the monthly installments of your premium.
The healthcare benefit (in Dutch: Zorgtoeslag) is a compensation by the government towards the premium an insured has to pay for the Dutch Basic Healthcare Insurance. The healthcare benefit is issued by the Dutch tax authorities (Belastingdienst). The amount of and the eligibility for the healthcare benefit depends on your income.
Please note that the healthcare benefit is only applicable with a public Dutch Basic Healthcare Insurance. The Aon Student Insurance is a private insurance ant therefore, not a Dutch Basic Healthcare Insurance. If you have an Aon Student Insurance, you cannot apply for the healthcare benefit.
If you applied for the Dutch Basic Health Insurance, we advise you to apply for the healthcare benefit afterwards. The Belastingdienst will assess your inquiry and decides whether you are eligible for the healthcare benefit. You can apply for the healthcare benefit here.
All international students in the Netherlands can expect this letter from the CAK at a certain moment. You received this letter, because every permanent resident or temporary resident working in the Netherlands, is obliged to have a Dutch Basic Healthcare Insurance. In most cases, the obligation to take out the Dutch Basic Healthcare Insurance does not apply to international students in the Netherlands, who do not work.
Be aware that the Aon Student Insurance is not equivalent to the Dutch Basic Healthcare Insurance. Aon Student Insurance is a private insurance for students.
What to do? Please find a flowchart here to determine which actions you must take when you have received the letter from the CAK. In addition to the flowchart, we would like you to be aware of the following subjects.
Fine If you do not act within 3 months after receiving the first letter, CAK will impose a fine. Therefore, please make sure to take action as soon as you receive the letter.
Working along your study? If you currently have a part-time job in the Netherlands next to your study, you have to apply for the Dutch Basic Healthcare Insurance as soon as possible.

When you are in possession of a valid EHIC during your study period, it only provides coverage for essential medical expenses. Please note that this does not include any costs for medical evacuation, physical therapy, acupuncture or emergency dental expenses. You are also not covered for your personal possessions, liability, legal aid, emergency assistance and extra travel expenses.
We strongly advise you to take out an additional (secondary) insurance with us during your study abroad, for the risks that you are not covered for with your EHIC. You can insure yourself with an Aon Student Insurance to be certain that you are properly insured during your study period.
Keep in mind that the period your EHIC is valid and what is covers, depends on your home country and destination country. Please verify the validity of your EHIC with your insurer in your home country for your study period abroad.
